Understanding the top 5 reasons to seek asylum in the US

1. Persecution by race

If someone is mistreated or discriminated against in their country solely because of race, they can seek asylum. This includes any form of violence or unfair treatment that they receive simply because of their skin color or racial origin.

 2. Persecution by religion

If you live in a place where you are not allowed to follow your religion freely, or if you are attacked for your religious beliefs, you may qualify for asylum. This is for people who are persecuted because they practice a religion different from the majority in their country or have decided not to follow any religion.

 3. Nationality

This refers to when someone is persecuted for being part of a specific national or ethnic group. If you belong to an ethnic minority that is attacked or discriminated against, this could be a basis for asylum.

 4. Political opinion

If you are in danger because you disagree with the government of your country, or if you are an activist and your life is at risk for your political ideas or actions, you could apply for asylum. This also applies to journalists and others who speak out against injustices in their country.

 5. Membership of a particular social group

This reason may include people of different sexual orientations or gender identities who are persecuted, or any group that is mistreated for characteristics that cannot change or should not be forced to change.
